Beyond Learning to Swim: The Role of Sharks 3 in Drowning Prevention

At Happy Tiddlers, we often hear parents say:
“My child can already swim… do they really need to finish Goldfish 3?”
The answer is absolutely YES
And recent events have shown why this is more important than ever.

Over the past couple of weeks, a number of people have tragically lost their lives after entering open water during the hot weather. The heartbreaking reality is that many of those individuals could swim.
What they often lacked wasn't the ability to move through the water — it was the knowledge, confidence and understanding of how to stay safe around water.
Open water presents dangers that swimming pools do not. Cold water shock, hidden currents, sudden changes in depth, exhaustion and panic can quickly overwhelm even competent swimmers. Knowing how to recognise risks, stay calm, conserve energy and make safe decisions around water can be just as important as being able to swim.
Why Water Safety Is Personal to Me
My passion for water safety comes from personal experience.
When I was 11 years old, I had a near-drowning experience. Although it happened in a swimming pool rather than open water, it had a lasting impact on me.
What makes this experience particularly important is that I was already a good swimmer. I was confident in the water and considered myself capable. Yet despite that, I still found myself in difficulty.
That experience taught me a lesson I have never forgotten: being able to swim and being safe in the water are not always the same thing.

For many years afterwards, I avoided going out of my depth in a pool, and going into the sea was completely out of the question. The confidence I had once had around water disappeared almost overnight.
When we had our son, I knew I wanted him to be safe around water, so we enrolled him in
swimming lessons. Watching him learn and develop his skills reminded me of something I had almost forgotten — how much I love being in the water.
Through his swimming journey, I rediscovered my own confidence and passion for swimming. More importantly, it reinforced my belief that every child should have the opportunity not only to learn how to swim, but also to develop a love and respect for the water, alongside the confidence and awareness needed to stay safe around it.
That is what drives everything we do at Happy Tiddlers. We want children to enjoy the water, build confidence, learn vital safety skills and develop an ability that could one day save their life.
This is why I feel so strongly about children completing programmes such as Goldfish 3 and Sharks 3. Swimming further, treading water, building stamina and learning survival skills aren't just achievements to tick off a list — they are skills that could make all the difference when it matters most.
The Risk of Leaving Lessons Too Early

One of the biggest dangers in swimming is the gap between confidence and actual ability.
A child may appear confident in the water but still lack:
Stamina
Survival skills
Reliable breathing control
Self-rescue ability
Children who stop lessons too early may:
Tire quickly
Panic in the water
Struggle if they cannot stand up
Overestimate their swimming ability
This is why completing Sharks 3 and the full Goldfish programme is so important.
The reality is that being able to swim a length is not the same as being safe around water. True water competence comes from understanding how to react when things don't go to plan, how to stay calm, how to conserve energy and how to make safe decisions around water. These are the skills that we build throughout our programme.
More Than “Just Another Badge”
Our Sharks programme is designed to help children become:
Stronger swimmers
Safer around water
More confident in the water
Better prepared for emergencies
Ready for future swimming and lifesaving stages

And nothing beats the feeling of graduating from Happy Tiddlers, having completed all of your awards — celebrating not just swimming ability, but the confidence, resilience and life skills developed along the way.
This is why swimming lessons are about far more than collecting badges. Each stage of the STA Learn to Swim Programme is carefully designed to build the confidence, stamina, technique and safety skills children need to become genuinely capable swimmers.
Greater stamina
Stronger stroke technique
Better control in the water
Water safety and survival skills
Independence and confidence
This is often the stage where children stop being nervous beginners and begin becoming genuinely capable young swimmers.
Our Sharks programme is designed to build children into safe, confident and capable swimmers gradually.
Our levels follow the STA Learn to Swim Programme:

Sharks 1 covers STA Stanley 4 & 5
Sharks 2 covers STA Stanley 6 & 7
Sharks 3 covers STA Goldfish 1, 2 & 3
As children progress through these stages, they move from building basic water confidence to developing the stronger swimming and safety skills needed to become genuinely independent swimmers.
Sharks 1 – Building Confidence & Foundations
In Sharks 1, children begin developing:
Water confidence
Safe entries and exits
Floating and breath control
Early propulsion skills
This stage focuses on helping swimmers feel comfortable and secure in the water while introducing the core foundations needed for future progression.
Sharks 2 – Developing Independence
As swimmers progress into Sharks 2, they begin learning:
Independent travel through the water
Rotation skills
Early stroke patterns
Improved breathing habits
Children become more coordinated, more confident and increasingly independent in the pool.
Sharks 3 – Developing Safety & Capability
Sharks 3 incorporates STA Goldfish 1, 2 & 3 and is a major milestone in a child’s swimming journey.
At this stage, swimmers develop:
Greater stamina
Stronger stroke technique
Better control in the water
Water safety and survival skills
Independence and confidence
This is often the stage where children stop being nervous beginners and begin becoming genuinely capable young swimmers.
Why Is Finishing Sharks 3 So Important?
Swimming lessons are about far more than badges — they are about keeping children safe around water.
Learning to Tread Water

Children learn how to stay afloat calmly without constantly swimming. This is one of the most important water safety skills a child can develop. The Goldfish awards teach children how to tread water effectively and for longer periods, helping them stay calmer, conserve energy and remain safer in the water.
Building Confidence in the Water
Many children are confident when they can stand, but become anxious when they cannot touch the bottom. Goldfish 3 helps children remain calm and controlled in these situations.
Even though most children at this level can stand in our pool, we actively encourage them to keep swimming and avoid touching the bottom wherever possible. This helps children build confidence, stamina and independence in the water, rather than relying on standing up when they feel unsure.
Developing Early Lifesaving Skills
Children begin learning controlled floating and lifesaving-style movements that help them conserve energy and stay safer in the water.
Building Stamina
Swimming a few metres is very different from swimming safely and confidently over longer distances. Goldfish 3 helps children develop the endurance needed to become genuinely capable swimmers.
At Happy Tiddlers, we believe swimming is not just a hobby — it is about creating a love and respect for water while developing a life skill that could one day save your life. Our goal is not simply to teach children how to swim, but to help them become confident, capable and safety-aware around water for life.
